Easter Activities for Children

MOMMY ON BOARD - Kristalle Garcia-Kekert - The Freeman

Easter is on Sunday the 20th of April this year. It is the oldest and one of the most important festivals of the Christian Church. But to young children, Easter is the time of colorfully decorated Easter eggs, egg hunting and the Easter bunny!

The most original of Easter party games is the Bunny Egg Hunt where Easter eggs are hidden all over the place, including the one very special egg called the "Golden Egg." The lucky child who finds this special egg wins a prize!

Another game is the Easter Egg Race, where the egg is placed in a spoon that participants hold, balancing so as not to let it fall off as the child runs from point A to B. The one who makes it to the finish line first wins!

There's another one called the Bunny Egg Catching. This requires teams of two members each. One member holds the egg (usually the egg is uncooked to make it much fun, but not advised for younger children) while the other tries to catch it. Once the egg is caught, the pair steps apart and starts throwing it to each other. The catching and stepping back continues until the egg falls and breaks! The team who lasts the longest wins!

How about Easter colouring pages for the little ones who are still learning how to read? This is very simple. You use black and white images of anything Easter-y and let the kids color them. Don't forget to provide lots of crayons and easy washable markers to avoid a bigger mess during clean up!

A fun and interesting story will do, too. You might want to include "The Easter Story," or "The Tale of Peter Rabbit" by Beatrix Potter and other stories written by the same writer. It is sure to be an excellent Easter activity for children!

Easter will never be complete without Easter desserts. There are many to choose from, it's all up to you to be creative. Chick or Bunny shaped cookies, topped cupcakes and even cakes are a fantastic idea! Or just stick to the usual chocolate or candied eggs with a special gift hidden inside. Some even choose to create their very own chocolate nest! On the more savoury side, try creating your own hot-cross buns eaten with butter and jam. You may choose to add chocolate chips or cheese - children will love that! So invent, create!

For presents to give for Easter, why not create your own Easter baskets filled with yummy goodies? Or, how about some nice and fancy egg, chick or bunny shaped chocolates that are nicely wrapped? Even religious Easter baskets and flowers make a wonderful present!

A wonderful Easter to you and your family!
