I was in Japan earlier this year, booked at a hotel in Shinjuku, and one of the stops on my personal itinerary was the bar from Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation, just because. I loved that film, and The Virgin Suicides, and Marie Antoinette (mostly for the costumes), and The Bling Ring, while not necessarily among the better films of 2013, was entertaining enough.

For someone who spent a good majority of her adolescent years obsessed with anime and manga, even I find it surprising that I only visited Japan for the first time last year. And true to tourist form, we did all the expected stops: a quick sweep of Tokyo, a temple run through Kyoto, and a food trip through Osaka, with an overnight stay in Hakone for some yukata-clad ryokan realness. (A ryokan is a traditional Japanese hotel, and the ones in Hakone have their own onsen or hot springs.)

I was going to write about something else until my belt snapped in a public restroom about 15 minutes prior to typing this. Never mind the humiliation or the fact that I had a cheese steak still waiting to be eaten outside.

Japan may not be a Christian country, although they have more Christian martyrs (San Lorenzo Ruiz was martyred in Nagasaki) than the Philippines, but Christmas is very much in the air in Japan, especially in Shinjuku, the major commercial and administrative center of the Tokyo Metropolitan Administration right at the heart of Tokyo.
