EDITORIAL — Most consequential U.S. midterm elections yet
On November 3, 2026, around 250 million qualified Americans will take to the polls to decide on 435 Congressional district and 33 Senate seats in what looks to be the most consequential midterm polls in modern times.
If the Republicans win the Lower House and the Senate, this will mean a continuation of President Donald Trump’s policies local and foreign policies.
And this isn’t necessarily a good thing.
Locally, his tough stance on immigration has spilled over to those who aren’t even immigrants, what with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement personnel being accused of unreasonably attacking and arresting even locals mistaken for illegal foreigners.
His policies have also threatened naturalized U.S. citizens, threatening to strip them of citizenship and face deportation to a country they are no longer familiar with.
Internationally, his foreign policies aren’t being loved by many countries either. Remember how he levied tariffs on all the trading partners of the U.S.? Or how he practically kidnapped the president of Venezuela? Or how he is currently undermining Ukraine by cozying up to Russia for their oil? Or how he has consistently denied the existence of climate change and refused to take steps to cut greenhouse gases? Or how he started a war with Iran without the approval of the U.S. Congress?
Let’s not forget that that war is still ongoing and has had adverse effects throughout the world, including a rise in oil prices, regional instability, and the possibility of that escalating outside the region.
All things being fair, it would be wrong to say that President Trump doesn’t have any good local and foreign policies. But status quo isn’t exactly beneficial for most Americans and the rest of the world.
If the Democrats win Congress they might stall or even prevent some of his more destructive and self-destructive policies from becoming reality. More so if they win both Congress and the Senate.
