Red Cubs, Kittens prevail in Martin Cup
MANILA, Philippines - San Beda’s two teams scored victories in contrasting fashions in juniors division while Letran crushed Batang Gilas in seniors play in the 23rd Fr. Martin Cup Summer Basketball tournament at San Beda gym in Mendiola.
Evan Nelle shot 16 points while Liam Barbero and Pedro Alfaro added 12 and 11 points, respectively, as the San Beda-Rizal Red Cubs foiled the Emilio Aguinaldo College side, 76-71, for a 1-1 card in Group A.
Joshua Tagala rattled off eight points in the closing minute to help secure the five-pint victory for the Season 92 NCAA finalist Red Cubs.
The San Beda-Manila Red Kittens, on the other hand, drew 20 points from Jharles Uy as they smothered the La Salle Greenhills Greenies, 75-62, for their first win in Group B in the tournament backed by Armor on Sportswear.
In the other juniors result, Manila Patriotic School tripped St. Patrick School, 71-56.
Meanwhile, the Letran Knights proved too much for the Batang Gilas Under-16 national team, scoring a runaway 97-72 rout in the seniors division.
In women’s matches, National University blasted College of St. Benilde, 92-37, while Enderun College edged Far Eastern University, 75-74.
