Algieri expects ‘classy’ Pacquiao in media tour

MANILA, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao and Chris Algieri will meet face-to-face for the first time on Monday, Aug. 25, in Macau as they kick off their two-week worldwide media tour to promote their November fight.

The undefeated American is looking forward to the same gracious, classy Pacquiao to show up at the Florence Ballroom of The Venetian Macao on Monday, the first stop of their promotional tour.

“I expect us to have a humble and refreshing press conference Monday,” Algieri told Michael Woods of the boxing website The Sweet Science.

Algieri definitely knows that trash-talking isn’t in Pacquiao’s nature, contrary to other boxers who used to talk smack to each other during press tours to add hype to their upcoming fights.

But the same might not be applicable to both fighters’ trainers.

“Although I'm guessing maybe the trainers will have their say,” Algieri continued, referring to Pacquiao’s longtime Freddie Roach and his counterpart Tim Lane.

Roach is known to be outspoken during pre-fight interviews and has been involved in some verbal tussles with his fellow trainers in some of Pacquiao’s previous fights. The bespectacled trainer has traded barbs with Floyd Mayweather Sr., who trained Ricky Hatton for his bout with Pacquiao, as well as Robert Garcia in the Filipino’s fight with Brandon Rios.

Algieri said his trainer doesn’t pull any punches as well.

“We may have to pull Tim (Lane) back. He can unload!” he added.

The Pacquiao-Algieri media tour also includes stops in Shanghai, China, and San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York in the US.

The fight will be held on Nov. 23 at the Cotai Arena of The Venetian Macao.
