Ardina cards 70 to share lead

-

Dottie Ardina fired three birdies in the last six holes to shoot a two-under par 70 to show the way with four others at the start of the 108th WWGA (Western Women’s Golf Association) National Amateur Championship at the Summergrove Golf Club’s Canongate course in Newnan, Georgia Monday.

Ardina, teeing off at the backside of the par-72, 6396-yard layout, used a near impeccable short game and rescued three pars in four times that she went out of regulation, finishing with 34-36 for joint share of the lead in the first round of the 36-hole stroke play elims.

Other 70 scorers were Candace Schepperle of Alabama (36-34), Courtney Harter of Florida (34-36), Margaret Shirley of Georgia (37-33) and Arizona’s Mari Mezuia (36-34).

A shot adrift at 71 were the duo of Jenne Arsenault and Cindy LaCrosse while Cydney Clanton, Milena Savich, Alina Lee and Laura Crawford matched par 72s.

The top 64 players after two rounds will advance to the match play phase of the tournament which drew 143 players.

But while Ardina frolicked under tough playing condition, her ICTSI teammates struggled all day with Louise Manalo carding a 77 for a share of 38th place. Bambee dela Paz stood at joint 61st with a 78 while RP Ladies Open champion Chihiro Ikeda and RP Amateur winner Anya Tanpinco limped with 79s for a share of 74th place.

Cyna Rodriguez, Mia Piccio and Sarah Ababa had 81, 83 and 85, respectively.

“I played quite well today even with some holes set-up quite long,” said Ardina, who didn’t have trouble hitting her fairway woods to reach the greens. She birdied Nos. 4, 5, 7 and 12 inside 8 feet but dropped shots on No. 11 and No. 15.
