Human rights lawyer itinumba sa Abra, ika-3 sa ilalim ng Marcos Jr. admin

MANILA, Philippines — Patay ang public interest lawyer na si Ma. Saniata Liwliwa Gonzales Alzate matapos tambangan ng dalawang hindi pa kilalang lalaki sa Bangued, Abra nitong Huwebes nang hapon.

Nasa loob ng puting Mitsubishi Mirage G4 sedan (AVA 6533) si Alzate nang biglang lumapit ang mga masamang-loob bago magpaputok nang hindi bababa sa walong beses. Naka-park sa tapat ng kanyang bahay ang sasakyan nang mangyari ang insidente.

"We mourn the passing of Atty. Ma. Saniata Liwliwa Gonzales-Alzate, a brilliant legal aid & public interest case lawyer," wika ng Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) Northern Luzon Region ngayong Biyernes.

"She is a loss to the IBP where she served as a former president of her chapter & a CBD commissioner. We join her family in prayer & in seeking justice to her senseless killing."

Iniutos na ni Brig. Gen. David K. Peredo, Jr., regional police director ng Cordillera, ang paghahanap sa mga salarin na biglang humarurot patungo diumano sa direksyon ng Brgy. Consiliman, Zone 2, Bangued.

Dalawang terminong tumayo bilang presidente ng IBP Abra chapter si Alzate at sinasabing umupo bilang Commissioner of Bar Discpline simula 2015.

"A strongly principled lady lawyer and an epitome of valor, she readily heeded to the call for help of the underprivileged, oppressed and downtrodden," wika pa ng IBP Northern Luzon.

Kilalang asawa ang biktima ni Raphiel Alzate, dating acting presiding judge ng Regional Trial Court Branch 24 sa Cabugao, Ilocos Sur at RT Branch 588 sa Bucay, Abra.

'Human rights cases posibleng may kinalaman'

Kinumpirma ni National Union of Peoples' Lawyers (NUPL) president Ephraim Cortez sa Philstar.com na si Alzate na ang ikatlong abogadong napatay simula nang maupo si Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr.:

• Elmer Mape (ika-22 ng Agosto 2023)
• Alzate (ika-14 ng Setyembre 2023)

"Actually, [this is the] third, but we cannot confirm if all killings are related to the exercise of profession," paliwanag naman ni Joselee Deinla, secretary general ng NUPL, sa panayam din ng Philstar.com.

"Atty. Alzate's [killing] appears to be [connected to her profession], given the nature of her cases."

Ayon sa grupo, Enero 2023 nang magbigay ng kanyang legal assistance si Alzate sa ilang biktima ng illegal arrest, detention at torture diumano sa kamay ng Philippine National Police.

Matagumpay naman daw nakakuha ang abogada ng Writ of Amparo mula sa Abra RTC kaugnay ng kaso. Hinihingian pa ng Philstar.com ng pahayag ang Abra Police Provincial Office ngunit hindi pa rin tumutugon.

"She had been providing pro-bono legal service to indigent litigants and has been serving as private prosecutor in the slaying of a teacher allegedly by a barangay chairperson," sabi pa ng NUPL sa hiwalay na pahayag.

"The persistent climate of impunity renders possible these brazen, daylight killings of members of the legal profession, including judges and prosecutors."

"The NUPL extends its heartfelt sympathies to Atty. Alzate’s family for their loss. The NUPL mourns the loss of a colleague in the legal profession who was committed to serve the poor and marginalized. It joins her family’s call for others to carry the torch sparked by her spirit of service."

Probinsya ng Abra sumigaw ng katarungan

Nagpaabot na rin ng kanyang pakikiramay si Abra Gov. Dominic Valera sa kinasapitan ni Alzate, ito habang ipinapangako ang hustisiya.

"I urge the law enforcers for the speedy and swift investigation of the killing of Atty. Alzate and for the immediate resolution of this case," ani Valera sa isang pahayag sa Facebook.

"Dawatek iti amin nga Abreño ti tulongyo iti pannakabigbig kadagiti akin aramid iti daytoy nakakaskas-ang a napasamak kenni Atty. Alzate."

(Humihingi ako ng tulong sa lahat ng Abreño para mapabilis na mahanap kung sino man ang may kagagawan sa nakakapanlumong nangyari kay Atty Alzate.)

Dagdag pa ng gobernador, nararapat lang na maisuko sa otoridad ang mga pumatay sa abogado lalo na't banta raw sa kapayapaan ng Abra ang naturang karahasan.
