MANILA, Philippines — Umaasa ang Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) na magpapatuloy ang magandang performance ni national pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena sa mga international competitions.

Kamakailan ay nagposte si Obiena ng bagong personal best at Asian record na 5.93 meters sa 17th Golden Roof Challenge sa Innsbruck, Austria.

“Nakikita na natin na although hindi siya con­tinually nagbe-break ng record, but you can see that there is a consistency on parang leveling up,” ani PATAFA spokesperson at marketing head Edward Kho sa “People Sports Conversations” program ng Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Ang nasabing lundag na 5.93m ng 2019 Southeast Asian Games gold medalist ang bumasag sa kanyang sariling national record na 5.91m na inilista niya sa Paris Diamond League noong Hulyo.

“Ang kanyang base na ngayon is 5.80m. Dati kasi ang dating range niya is 5.50m or 5.60m, ngayon 5.80m and he already reached the 5.90,” sabi ni Kho. “We can just hope that he will continue to improve.”

Dahil sa pagsira ng 6-foot-2 na si Obiena ng dalawang national records at isang Asian mark ay bibigyan siya ng PSC ng cash incentives na P1.5 milyon.

Samantala, hinihintay pa ng PATAFA ang go signal mula sa PSC, Inter-Agency task Force (IATF) at Department of Health (DOH) para sa kanilang bubble training sa Baguio City.
