Letters to the Editor

The true winner

The Philippine Star

Now that the election has come to an end, instead of adding fuel to fire, douse it with serenity and calmness. Instead of egging others to be cruel, show compassion and mercy. Instead of heckling, cursing, name-calling  and making others feel so dumb and naive because of their stand, let humility reign in our hearts and minds.

Sad to say, others opted to remain conceited, selfish and inhumane. This election fever reminds us that there’s nothing to show off. You may think that you can surpass others because of your intelligence, you may think that you are that good because you are one of the fittest and you may think that you have the right to trample one’s dignity because you let others cower in fear. Wake up! It may sound like a cliché, but spread love, not hate.

After all, our country will not progress and may remain dormant if we keep on inflicting vengeance on one another, if we keep on mudslinging one another and if we keep on barking at each other, ending up in humiliation and pain. Our country is already too chaotic, too noisy and too divided, so stop the flamboyant display of arrogance.

Let the burgeoning seed of hope flourish in our Motherland. Let the patriotism be awakened again in the core of our hearts.

I humbly say that I’m not one of the 31 million Filipinos who are painting the whole country in red right now because they have catapulted someone to power who they think will be the catalyst of change. At least I have made a choice that I will never regret for the rest of my life.

With all my conscience and sincerity, I cast my vote. I exercised my right and freedom. Unfortunately, others did not make it and were not able to survive that epochal day. And that is something we must be thankful and grateful for.

My voice may not be able to resonate to the whole society. And I wasn’t able to emerge triumphant. But being defeated doesn’t make me a lesser person but instead it gives me a million reasons to do something good, not just for myself but for the future of my children. And I still cling to the last fiber of hope that someday our country will be emancipated from the toxicity and negativity that continue to pull us down. If we have that mentality, I believe that we are all true winners in our own little ways.

Yes, the day of reckoning has come to an end, but the real battle has just begun. So buckle up for the twists and turns that lurk before us. May justice prevail. May the empty stomach be fed. May the less fortunate be given ample opportunity.

Red, green, pink or blue – disregard the color which you think is dominant and powerful enough. If we combine all these colors then how much stronger and united we will be.

Lastly, let’s keep our fingers crossed that we as one can withstand the storms that may come in our lives. – Jasmin G. Angilan, Catigbian, Bohol
