A hero in every Filipino

The Philippine Star

It has been a year now that we Filipinos have lived our lives amidst pandemic. Yet, the good thing to know is that Filipinos remained optimistic,  hopeful, courageous, resilient, faithful and, most of all, helpful despite difficult times.

It is touching to see Filipinos of all ages thrive with life, not just survive. Every day, they persist to do their duties with enthusiasm and gusto whatever status they are in.  Industrious jeepney drivers wait for passengers patiently, even though few are taking a ride. Market vendors continue to provide product varieties from farmers who never get tired tilling the soil and fishermen who risk lives through deeper seas just to bring food to our tables.

Riders beat the scorching heat to deliver orders despite dangers of fraud and road accidents. Doctors, nurses and health workers spend nights in hospitals to save the sick and the dying. Pharmacists keep stores open for medicines to be availed of at any time. Fast food and grocery crew assist customers courteously despite health risks before them.  People in uniform make sure that health protocols are followed strictly and peace and order is observed seriously. Persistence among Filipinos is indeed evident.

Despite challenging times, Filipinos still know how to think of others, not just themselves. Neighborhoods and local organizations build community pantries to help the marginalized make both ends meet. We have witnessed the spirit of bayanihan all around. That’s how Filipinos are in the middle of a great test.

Above all, Filipinos remained faithful. They continue to believe that tomorrow will always be brighter.

Truly, there is a hero in every Filipino. – Ana Igloria, Laguna
