Minus ABS-CBN, TV viewing would be incomplete

The Philippine Star

Many people have a notion that President Duterte can close down ABS-CBN Corp. Only a few of them know that, under the 1987 Constitution, private bills (ones that affect purely private interest such as those granting a franchise) shall originate exclusively in the House of Representatives. The House alone can initiate the passage of a private bill, such that if the House does not initiate one, no private bill will be enacted into law.

The “Kapamilya Network’s” legislative franchise will expire eight months from now, or on March 30, 2020. If its franchise will not be renewed, then it will just focus on its online platform called “iWant.” Moreover, all the Kapamilya shows, actors, actresses, reporters, celebrities, singers, etc. will still be visible through its formidable YouTube Channels and Facebook Pages.

GMA 7’s and TV5’s franchises have already been renewed. Now, if ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal will not be granted, then the viewing experience of the Filipino masses would be incomplete. Philippine television will never be the same without the Kapamilya station. – LKM Gelacio, Cauayan City, Isabela
