The four pronged fight to become mayor

The balls of local politics are already rolling with more than a year before the next elections. Incumbent Mayor Michael Rama has already announced his intention to seek reelection. On the other side, his nemesis Tomas Osmeña also said that he is fielding Cebu City Councilor Nestor Archival for the position. Others who are aspiring for the position are MCWD chairman Joey Daluz and former Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency regional director Yogi Ruiz. All these four individuals are fit to become the country's top official, but are they right for it? Instead of discussing what they have to offer to the city, we must focus on what needs to be addressed. Take note that this point of view comes from a Cebuana born and raised in the city, but now resides in the town of Consolacion, northern Cebu.

For instance, we are looking into a leader who is considerate of the environment. Every day the city faces the threat of plunging deep into a multitude of environmental problems. Our spaces continue to be saturated by construction and concrete where there is no more space for rainwater to pass through. The mountain barangays continue to be disturbed with movement as those with their own interests keep on erecting structures that would attract a greater market. The need for a serene view is used as a marketing tool at the expense of harming the environment.

We also need a leader who can provide a clear strategy on how to address the traffic situation. The scenario at the South Road Properties is unlike before. Back when it was just opened, motorists would enjoy the South Coastal Road like an expressway. As it is now, there is a bottleneck at certain portions. It is not about the volume of vehicles but proper management of its daily flow especially during rush hour.

There is also a clamor for a leader who is inclusive regardless of race, ethnicity, and gender. As a progressive city, Cebu deserves to be a role model when it comes to embracing the culture of others including their own identity. Our openness to everyone's flaws and features set us apart. This is so even if we are labeled as the cradle of Christianity.

The competencies of a good Cebu City mayor could go on and we continue to fumble over who deserves the seat better. There is still a long way to go and many revelations could unfold in the coming months. If the polls get confusing, it would be safe to choose the one who has the heart for the next generation. That means that the person acknowledged his short term and the younger people can take care of the city better.
