Marcos Navarro Sacol, the Master Writer/Director of Visayan Drama

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

The brains behind the drama, “Maria Flor de Luna” adopted on national television starred by Janice de Belen on the limelight for decades was a Cebuano, his name was Marcos Navarro Sacol. He was born on October 7, 1937, he was the son of Onofre Sacol and Belen Navarro. His siblings were Hipolito, Jamie, Socorro, Gaudencia, and Atello.

The master writer’s other creations were: “Amorsola,” “Hinug sa Punuan,” “Banay ni Iyo Bentoy,” “Manok ni San Pedro,” “Si Goot da Wanderpol,” “Milyonaryong Mini,” “Primitivo ala Suerte,” and “Gugmang Dako’g Mata” among others. “Milyonaryong Mini” was aired on national television starred by Anjo Yllana and John Estrada in 1996. “Flor de Luna” was revived in 2007, starred by Eula Valdez, Albert Martinez, Eliza Pineda, and Vina Morales.

He directed dramas in almost all the radio and television stations in Cebu, in dyAB, dyLA, dySS, dyCB, dyRF, GMA-7, CCTN, dyHP, and dyMF Bombo Radyo Cebu.

He mentored dozens of talents who are now stars of their own. Among them Charles Nadela (Bentong), Dapne Teo (Salud), Lilibeth Sabellon (Petra), Bebot Santos (Cosme), and Romy Warain (Porto), who were the cast of “Milyonaryong Mini.” Jeffrey Astillo more known as “Kuya Tiboy” (a director/anchor of dyAB, and a mainstay of the very popular early morning program Puto Sikwate) is just one of the many people he helped craft their talents. He also helped crews and production staff to be what they are today, one of them is Jefferson Canada, presently working at MyTv Studio. The late Cebu’s entertainment tri-media personality, Kriss Relatado was one of the original cast of the brainchild of Director Marcos.

Director Marcos married Sarah Nadela. Just like the literary masterpieces he produced, the couple produced the following children; Virgilio, Eric, Jarabella, Glorioso, Joselito, Isagani, Cesar, Sammy, Abraham, and Emmanuel.

Marcos Navarro Sacol, the man who made famous Julian Daan who played the role of Esteban Escudero on the radio airwaves for decades (he was also elected as board member/councilor), died on May 18, 2019 at the age of 81. Cebu is truly not only the birthplace of heroes, it is also the birthplace of literary masters.
