Going global

VERBAL VARIETY - Annie Fe Perez - The Freeman

The days where men and women of all walks of life prepare for what could have been Cebu's biggest event has now come to a close. Sinulog 2016 officially ended with grand fireworks display at the Cebu City Sports Center on the eve of the seventeenth. There were dances, props, and music that chimed the thought of Cebu's going global.

Whenever we hear the word global, there is so much sense into it that sometimes scares the hell out of me. Imagine, our little humble island which is blessed with numerous sights, sounds, food and many others will be placed on the maps for another moment in time for the International Eucharistic Congress. It is a one week activity devoted to the many programs set by the Archdiocese which is to be attended to by delegates from over 71 countries.

Of course, we will be subject to critiquing and there will be a lot as compared to others. We will be the center of attention. Critiques will be on the sidelines watching our every move making sure we meet the standards as that of the rest of the world. There will be those who will cast judgment which may change the course of the way Cebuanos will live their lives.

But our lives down here isn't at all perfect. We have so many problems that we can't even seem to face ourselves. Our province is at its boom with so much going on that we forgot how to cope up with the effects. Traffic jams will always be a given and there is a horrendous sight of pollution just everywhere. Yet, I don't think this limits one's description of how beautiful Cebu is.

Going global means being at par with everyone else. It goes to say that we are of standard with those who may have been ahead and behind of us. Our province's name will resound throughout the world and there will be a surge of people who will not only be attending the said activity but will also visit and see what we have to offer.

Cebuanos have stood the test of time and can stand firm in anything that is to come. Sure, a lot of fuzz has been made and certain things like the disagreement between legislative and executive branches at Cebu City Hall, cutting of trees at mains roads and many others. It will be one hell of a week to deal with, add to that road congestion but for once, we can be proud of.

A thing that we could be proud of is that after more than five decades, we will be hosting this congress once again and it will be humbly done in Cebu. Just like how APEC managed to squish in a few moments in Cebu, we could say that there is some hidden charm to our place as to why people still choose to do international events here despite its small size.

Our products will also be once again featured in many media outlets which will entice the new comers to try them. There is a sense of empowerment in each and every one of us knowing that even those who come from developed countries know how to appreciate our own local food. There will objects handcrafted by Cebuanos which are of the best quality.

There is so much to say about Cebu and all that it has to offer. They say we should Celebrate Cebu!

But I'd like to say, it's better if we celebrate the Cebuano in us. It is the identity of us that allows imagining of events and sights that are worth going to by an ordinary people. It is in our being a Cebuano where people know what to do to make this province a better place. Honestly, I couldn't imagine where I should be right now.
