Alviola Street, Cebu City

CEBUPEDIA - Clarence Paul Oaminal - The Freeman

The Uldarico Alviola Street is the street formerly named as “Villagonzalo II Street” located in Barangay Tinago, Cebu City.

In the same barangay there were two streets named after “J. Villagonzalo,” a famous son of the place. On November 18, 1968, the Cebu City Council on motion of Councilor Bienvenido S. Tudtud enacted Ordinance No. 645 renaming “Villagonzalo II Street” to “Uldarico Alviola” in honor of another illustrious son of the barangay.

Councilor's Tudtud motion was seconded by Councilor Arturo L. Abellana.

Uldarico, from 1901-1955, served the government in various capacities, as Secretary of the Provincial Council, also as Deputy Governor of Cebu, then as Secretary of the then Municipality of Cebu, now the Cebu City Council.  His literary prowess was of great help to several mayors and governors of Cebu.

Uldarico did not only distinguish himself in public service, he was also a literary figure, being one of the acclaimed short story writers and novelists in the dialect and one of the few who contributed much to enrich the Visayan-Cebuano language.

He had several pen names like “Artagnan” and “Sikatuna”. He edited the “Ang Suga Magazine” of the Cebu Normal University. Among his works were “Felicitas” and “Ang Gugma sa Lalaki.”

In 1962, four years before his death, he received the “LUDABI Award.” His contemporaries were Angel Enemecio, Flaviano Boquecosa, Sulpicio Osorio and Nicolas Rafols.

The ordinance was approved during the incumbency of Mayor Eulogio E. Borres, who signed it for approval on November 21, 1968. The Secretary to the Mayor at that time was George Baladjay, while the Secretary of the City Council was Leodegario C. Salazar and its Presiding Officer was Florencio S. Urot.
