Even Luzonians call it habal-habal

HAVE BAT WILL STRIKE - Juanito V. Jabat   - The Philippine Star

I once saw this sign in a small but popular eatery: "Thank God it's Fried Day." It was a Friday and fried chicken was the main stuff.

I heard some people on TV talking about what a certain archbishop (in Luzon) called "marriage by proxy." Is that okay? If so how about "honeymoon by proxy"?

***

Habal-habal is now being used as the word for motorcycle-for-hire. Even in far-away Ilocos region it's habal-habal.

***

The word started in Cebu. Cebuanos know the meaning of habal-habal. Oh, if only the other Pinoys in non-Cebuano speaking areas know how the habal-habal transport came to be.

It says here that a Catholic group in India wants a Filipino priest to fill a missionary position. My friend Teddy H. laughed when I told him this. Polluted mind.

There is a bill in the Lower House filed by a party-list congressman that seeks to ban prayers and religious activities. It also prohibits religious signs and symbols in government offices. There is a government official with the crucifixion of Jesus tattooed on his chest. Is this covered by the ban?

When I was still young and well, I took in a movie once a week. I would go to the toilet to enjoy the pentel-penned graffiti on the wall. The most common scribbling was "Kilroy was here." I liked the one written crudely above a male urinal. It said: "The rise and fall of our population is in your hand."

A fellow mediaman met a Cebuano diplomat in the States who asked him: "Is my friend Nito Jabat still around and writing a column?" That was a polite way of saying: "Is my friend still living?"

***

OVERHEARD. "Grabe ang baha sa amoa. Nagbaha sad nuon ang relief nga pagkaon. Unta mobaha ang pagkaon bisan wa'y baha nga tubig."
