MANILA, Philippines — Amid a shortage in public transport, a former head of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board has asked the LTFRB to increase the cap on motorcycle taxis.

Former LTFRB chairman Winston Ginez urged the agency to revisit the motorcycle taxi cap of 45,000 in Metro Manila.

“Expanding the cap will be a practical step toward improving service availability while opening more legitimate earning opportunities for riders,” Ginez said.

A technical working group (TWG) led by the Department of Transportation regulates motorcycle-for-hire services.

The TWG caps the number of motorcycle taxis to 45,000. Of the number, 23,164 are assigned to industry leader Angkas.

Ginez said the LTFRB should adjust the fleet cap as commuters are affected by oil price hikes.
