PNP intensifies intel efforts amid alleged spy’s arrest
MANILA, Philippines — The arrest of a Mongolian national in Iba, Zambales for alleged espionage has prompted the Philippine National Police (PNP) to intensify its intelligence efforts against potential spies.
PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. yesterday ordered all police units to intensify monitoring and neutralize possible espionage activities nationwide.
“The safety and security of our nation remain our priority. We must remain vigilant and proactive in identifying and neutralizing any threat, especially those involving espionage,” Nartatez said.
The 30-year-old Mongolian was arrested on Feb. 12 at an aviation school on suspicion of engaging in espionage-related activities in favor of China.
The suspect allegedly took aerial photographs of the Iba Airport and the Palaui River area.
A background investigation on the suspect showed he is a licensed jet fighter pilot for the Chinese military.
Nartatez said the PNP is working closely with other concerned agencies to deter any form of threat to the country.
“We are committed to strengthening cooperation with all relevant agencies to ensure that any threat to our people is detected early and effectively neutralized,” he said.
