Kanlaon emits ash for 17 minutes
MANILA, Philippines — State volcanologists yesterday recorded a 17-minute ash emission at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island.
A time-lapse footage posted by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) showed the ash event occurred at 12:50 a.m. at the summit crater.
The emission generated plumes that rose 300 meters above the crater and drifted southwest, as recorded by a thermal camera installed at the Lower Masulog Observation Station.
Aside from the emission, Phivolcs said 14 volcanic earthquakes were also detected around Kanlaon as well as a sulfur dioxide flux of 294 tons per day.
Phivolcs said that Kanlaon’s edifice remained inflated.
Kanlaon, located at the boundary of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, has been under Alert Level 2 since July 2025.
Entry into the volcano’s four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone is strictly prohibited as well as flying an aircraft close to the summit due to the possibility of sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions and precursory magmatic activities.
