MANILA, Philippines — Over 5,000 police officers will be deployed in Metro Manila as students and teachers return to school on June 16.

The National Capital Region Police Office announced yesterday it would mobilize 5,344 NCRPO personnel to secure public and private schools.

These officers will be stationed in police assistance desks near schools.

At least 2,800 personnel serving as mobile patrol units and foot patrol officers will be dispatched to monitor key areas, with the Southern Police District posting the largest deployment.

“We want to reassure students, their parents and our educators that police will be there to ensure their safety, anchored on our recalibrated police visibility and institutionalized quick response to emergencies,” Metro Manila police chief Maj. Gen. Anthony Aberin said in a statement.

Waste-free schools

Meanwhile, an environmental group partnered with Payatas B Elementary School in Quezon City to push for a toxics-free and waste-free school opening.

Up to 1,500 students, teachers, parents, local officials and community partners participated yesterday in a cleanup to promote a safe and healthy learning environment for learners, educators and school personnel.

“School is like a second home for our children. So it is crucial to ensure their health and safety. Proper management of chemicals and waste must be an integral part of the school system to prevent harmful exposure to students and staff,” BAN Toxics advocacy and campaign officer Thony Dizon said.
