MANILA, Philippines — Three people were injured after a fire razed shanties in Tondo, Manila on Friday night.

Residents Erminia Barcinas, 38, and Roy Rance, 34, sustained first-degree burns while 20-year-old volunteer firefighter John Nernuel Lachica suffered cuts on his hands.

An estimated 85 families were displaced by the fire and are staying in nearby covered courts.

The blaze started at one of an estimated 30 houses that burned down at the corner of Quirino and Herbosa streets at past 10 p.m., according to an initial report from the Bureau of Fire Protection.

Nine fire trucks arrived at the scene. Residents helped fill up a fire truck with water as it struggled to get water from a hydrant due to narrow roads leading to the fire scene, according to radio reports.

The fire reached second alarm before it was put out at 11:48 p.m., said Manila Fire District director Sr. Supt. Christine Doctor-Cula.
