MANILA, Philippines — Sulfur dioxide emission from Taal Volcano reached another record high yesterday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.

Phivolcs said sulfur dioxide emissions of 11,499 tons were recorded.

The agency warned the public of sulfur dioxide emission accumulation and volcanic smog or vog formation near the volcano today.

Phivolcs said degassing of high concentrations of sulfur has been recorded since March 2021. Emissions have averaged 5,019 tons per day since September.

There has been continued upwelling of volcanic fluids in the main crater that generated short and weak to moderate volume degassing plumes.

Taal remains under Alert Level 1, which means the volcano is still in an abnormal condition.

Phivolcs warned the public of sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas.

Vog, which consists of fine droplets containing volcanic gas such as sulfur dioxide, can cause irritation of the eyes, throat and respiratory tract, with severities depending on the gas concentrations and duration of exposure.

Phivolcs urged the public to limit outdoor activities and wear protection such as face masks.

People with health conditions should seek help from a doctor if serious effects are experienced.
