Magnitude-5.4 quake jolts Batanes
MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude-5.4 earthquake jolted several areas of Batanes yesterday morning, although no casualties or damage to propery were reported.
State seismologists said the quake’s epicenter was located 42 kilometers north of Sabtang town, where it was felt at Intensity 5.
Intensity 4 was felt in nearby Basco, Ivana, Mahatao and Uyugan towns, and Intensity 3 in Itbayat.
Instrumental Intensity 1 was felt in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte.
The quake, which was tectonic in origin, was expected to generate aftershocks. It forced residents of a building to rush to the exits, according to Roldon Esdicul, chief of the Batanes disaster risk reduction and management office.
Esdicul said that although Batanes had experienced quakes several times, yesterday’s temblor was the strongest so far.
