Distraught security guard shoots self, survives

MANILA, Philippines — A security guard cheated death after shooting himself while manning his post at a residential building in Malate, Manila on Sunday.

Jade Olaes, who was previously charged with robbery, suffered a gunshot to the chest and is now recovering in the hospital, according to the Manila Police District.

Probers said Olaes shot himself using his service firearm, a .38-caliber handgun.

He also left a suicide note, police said.– Ghio Ong

Fires hit Manila; 66 families homeless

At least 66 families were left homeless when fires struck Manila on Sunday night.

Arson probers said a fire razed houses along Onyx street in San Andres Bukid at around 10:40 p.m.

Barangay 767 chairman Jose Abrito said an unplugged rice cooker could have sparked the fire.

Another fire broke out at a five-story residential building at the corner of Almeda and Tayuman streets in Sta. Cruz.

John Russel Huerto and Reginio Madroño, who helped firefighters contain the blaze, were injured during the incident.
