Cop probed for son’s shooting in school

Ghio Ong - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A police officer, whose son accidentally shot himself in a school in San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, is facing investigation for neglect.

The investigation would determine if the police officer, who holds the rank of master sergeant, was guilty of neglect for allegedly giving his 12-year-old son access to his service firearm, according to Col. Redrico Maranan, public information chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP).

“Through an administrative investigation, the PNP would find out if the officer had placed his firearm in a safe place, padlocked and secured,” Maranan said.

“Definitely, there were lapses and that is a part of the investigation. We want to know the circumstances that led to the incident, we want to know how the boy got his father’s firearm,” he added.

Reports said the boy took his father’s service pistol to school. He was reportedly unlocking the gun in the school’s toilet when it went off, hitting him in the chin and nose.

The boy’s father is assigned at the PNP’s directorate for police community relations.
