Magnitude 5.3 quake hits Camarines Norte

Jolts parts of Metro Manila

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck off the coast of Camarines Norte yesterday, with its jolts felt in parts of Metro Manila.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded 24 kilometers east of Tinaga island at around 1:05 p.m.

The quake was tectonic in nature and had a depth of focus of one km.

Phivolcs said there was no expected damage from the quake, but warned the public of aftershocks.

The quake was felt at Intensity 4, which is classified as moderately strong, in Buenavista, Jomalig, Polillo and Quezon towns in Quezon; Capalonga, Daet, Labo and Vinzons in Camarines Norte, and Pamplona, Presentacion and Ragay in Camarines Sur.

It was recorded at Intensity 3 in the cities of Manila and Taguig as well as in Alabat, Catanauan, Guinayangan, Gumaca, Pitogo and Tagkawayan in Quezon; Tanay, Rizal; Boac and Sta. Cruz in Marinduque; Iriga, Minalabac, Pili, San Fernando and Siruma in Camarines Sur, and Donsol, Sorsogon.

Phivolcs said Intensity 2 was recorded in Mandaluyong, Quezon City, Pasig, Pasay, Meycauayan in Bulacan as well as in Batangas City and Talisay in Batangas; Infanta, Lucban and Perez in Quezon; Buenavista and Mogpog, Marinduque; Legazpi and Ligao cities in Albay, and Goa, San Jose and Tinambac in Camarines Sur.

The quake was reportedly felt at Intensity 1 in Alfonso, Cavite and Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

Instrumental intensity 5 was reported in Jose Panganiban and Mercedes, Camarines Norte and Intensity 4 in Guinayangan and Polillo, Quezon and Daet, Camarines Norte.

Instrumental intensity 3 was recorded in Alabat, Gumaca, Lopez, Mauban and Mulanay in Quezon, and Iriga, Pili and Ragay in Camarines Sur.

Instrumental Intensity 2 was recorded in Marikina; Pasig; Infanta, Pangasinan; Dingalan, Aurora; Calumpit, Marilao, Plaridel, Pulilan and San Ildefonso in Bulacan;  Gapan, Nueva Ecija; Guagua, Pampanga; Batangas City; Carmona, Cavite; Calauag, Dolores and Lucban in Quezon; Tanay and Taytay in Rizal; Tabaco, Albay and Sagñay, Camarines Sur.

The quake was recorded at Instrumental Intensity 1 in the cities of Malabon, Muntinlupa; Quezon, Pasay and San Juan in Metro Manila; Bulakan, Doña Remedios Trinidad, Guiguinto, Malolos, Obando, Pandi and Sta. Maria in Bulacan.

It was also felt in Cabanatuan, Gabaldon and San Antonio, Nueva Ecija; Tagaytay and Ternate in Cavite; Calamba and Los Baños in Laguna; Tayabas and Lucena in Quezon; Angono,  Antipolo, Cainta and Morong in Rizal; Calapan, and Pinamalayan in Oriental Mindoro; Legazpi, Albay, and Mapanas, Northern Samar.
