Retired Army officer slain in ambush

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Probers have yet to determine the motive in the ambush that killed a retired Army official and owner of a security agency in Quezon City on Monday.

Police investigators are searching for leads to identify the two men who killed ex-lieutenant Ferdinand Martinez, 57, owner of Prime Rangers Security Agency.

Martinez, a resident of Makati, was driving a Toyota Fortuner sport utility vehicle when he was attacked at the corner of North and Mindanao Avenues in Barangay Bagong Pag-asa at around 12:05 p.m.

A report from the Quezon City Police District said two men on a red motorycle, one armed with a handgun, were responsible for the ambush.

Police investigators, citing the accounts of witnesses, said the suspects stopped beside the victim’s vehicle. The back rider then pulled out a handgun and repeatedly shot him.

Martinez alighted from his vehicle and asked for help. Two bystanders brought him to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center for medical treatment.

Physicians tried to save Martinez but he died from multiple gunshot wounds at around 2:45 p.m.

Police recovered four bullet casings and a deformed bullet at the scene of the shooting.
