MANILA, Philippines — Personnel of the Philippine Navy rescued two injured Pakistani navy officers in the waters off Ilocos Sur on Friday.

Lt. Commander Mudassir Aziz Tamimi and Chief Petty Officer Zia-Ul-Islam, both of the naval vessel Shamsheer, were brought to a hospital in Cagayan for treatment.

Tamimi suffered injuries in the arms and legs. Zia-Ul-Islam had head injuries and was unconscious when rescued by personnel of the Naval Forces Northern Luzon (NFNL), according to Northern Luzon Command (NolCom) public information office chief Lt. Col. Elmar Salvador.

The Shamsheer encountered bad weather as it was sailing toward South Korea. It was reportedly headed to Japan for the fleet review of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.

NFNL personnel received a distress call from Shamsheer and opened the port of Sta. Ana in Cagayan, where the Pakistanis were given first aid before they were rushed to the Grupo Medico De Dios Hospital.

NolCom chief Lt. Gen. Ernesto Torres Jr. commended his men for their swift response.
