Zamboanga still under ‘red zone’ for ASF
ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) and city government here appealed for the cooperation of concerned sectors to abide by the protocols to curb the spread of African swine fever (ASF).
Dr. Mario Arriola, Office of the City Veterinarian chief, said Zamboanga City remains under the red zone classification of the DA, with hog farms in 15 barangays affected by ASF.
The ASF task force logged 360 new hog mortalities believed to be due to the swine disease, bringing the total to 1,595 as of July 8. Up to 368 hog raisers were affected.
The city government directed barangay officials to maintain a 24-hour checkpoint to prevent the entry and transport of hogs and pork products.
The rise in ASF cases has also disrupted the supply of pork in the city.
Meanwhile, a rabbit meat producers’ association here encouraged residents to try rabbit meat as an alternative source of protein.
