Magnitude 5.1 quakes hit Batanes, Sarangani

MANILA, Philippines — Two magnitude 5.1 earthquakes struck off the coast of Batanes and Sarangani on Friday night.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the first quake hit 30 kilometers south of Kiamba in Sarangani at around 10:25 p.m.

Phivolcs said the quake was felt at Intensity 4, which is classified as moderately strong, in Kiamba and Maitum in Sarangani.

The temblor was felt at Intensity 3 in the cities of General Santos, Zamboanga, Cotabato and Isabela; Maasim, Sarangani, and parts of South Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat.

It was felt at Intensity 2 in parts of Zamboanga del Norte, South Cotabato, Davao Occidental and Sultan Kudarat.

The second quake struck 41 kms west of Sabtang, Batanes at around 8:41 p.m.

It was felt at Intensity 4 in Sabtang and Intensity 3 in Uyugan, Ivana, Mahatao and Basco.
