MANILA, Philippines — At least 18,117 villagers were affected by Taal Volcano’s phreatomagmatic explosion in the past two weeks.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 1,604 of the 5,109 affected families remain in 25 evacuation centers.

Disaster officials ordered the forced evacuation of residents of Barangays Banyaga and Bilibinwang in Agoncillo as well as Gulled, Boso-boso and Lakeshore Bugaan East in Laurel.

A total of 113 barangays were affected by the volcano’s unrest.

Taal Volcano is still under Alert Level 3, which means magma extruding from the main crater could drive an explosive eruption.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded 99 volcanic earthquakes in the past 24 hours.

Ninety volcanic tremors with durations of one to 11 minutes, nine low-frequency volcanic earthquakes and a low-level background tremor were recorded.

Phivolcs said volcanic sulfur dioxide emissions averaged 6,574 tons per day. Steam-rich plumes that rose 1,2000 meters were also observed.
