Antipolo lawmaker dies after getting COVID-19

MANILA, Philippines — Another lawmaker has died from complications arising from COVID-19.

Antipolo second district Rep. Resurreccion Acop died at 6 a.m. yesterday due to multiple organ failure, her husband former congressman Romeo Acop confirmed. She was 73.

Acop said he and his wife tested positive for COVID-19 on April 8 and were confined at the Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan. He said he recovered after one week.

“She has comorbidity (asthma). She was brought to the intensive care unit and developed pneumonia after three days. And then she developed problems in her heart, kidney and liver,” the former congressman said.

Acop said his wife had been transferred to a regular room and had tested negative for COVID, ”but complications led to multiple organ failure.”

The House of Representatives mourned the death of the congresswoman.

“She will be remembered for her kindness, passion and commitment to selflessly serve the people of the second district of Antipolo City,” the House said in a statement.

Acop, who was on her first term, was vice chairperson of the House committee on health.

Two other lawmakers – Francisco Datol of Senior Citizens party-list and Ditas Ramos of Sorsogon – have died after they contracted COVID.
