164 quakes recorded around Taal
MANILA, Philippines — At least 164 earthquakes were recorded around Taal Volcano in the past 24 hours.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said 67 of the volcanic tremors lasted for one to two minutes each.
A weak emission of steam-laden plumes that rose 20 meters high from the fumarolic vents at the volcano’s main crater was observed.
Sulfure dioxide emissions averaged 605 tons per day, with temperature at the main crater lake at a high of 71.8 degrees Celsius and pH level of 1.59.
Phivolcs said Alert Level 2 remains up due to the possibility of sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulation or expulsion of volcanic gas.
The agency said entry on Taal Volcano island, which is a permanent danger zone, is prohibited.
Phivolcs advised local government officials to continuously assess and strengthen the preparedness of previously evacuated barangays in case of the volcano’s heightened unrest.
