P50 million giant clams seized in Negros
MANILA, Philippines — Around 10,000 kilos of giant clams, locally known as taklobo, valued at P50 million were seized in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental on Friday.
Ricardo de la Cruz Jr. was arrested after selling 1,000 kilos of clams for P5 million to a policeman who posed as a buyer in Barangay Pagatban, Philippine National Police chief Gen. Debold Sinas said.
Police are looking for Yan Hu Liang, a Taiwanese and reportedly the owner of the clams.
“This accomplishment ensures the sustainable conservation and protection of fishery and that aquatic resources law is being implemented by local authorities,” Sinas said in a statement.
Police said a .45-caliber pistol was recovered from the suspect.
De la Cruz and Yan are facing charges for violation of Republic Act 8550 or the Fisheries Code.
A separate complaint for illegal possession of a firearm was filed against De la Cruz.
