Ex-Bulacan police chief gunned down

Ramon Efren Lazaro - The Philippine Star

MALOLOS, Philippines — Motorcycle-riding gunmen killed a former Bulacan police chief and now head of the provincial government security group on Wednesday.

Maricel Cruz, provincial information officer, said retired Col. Fernando Villanueva was in his service vehicle Mitsubishi Strada on his way to Pampanga when he was attacked along Bagbag Bridge in Barangay Iba Este, Calumpit.

Witnesses said Villanueva alighted from the vehicle and tried to escape, but the gunmen followed him and finished him with more shots. His driver was unhurt.

Villanueva had just paid a courtesy call on Central Luzon police director Brig. Gen. Valeriano de Leon following a command conference with chiefs of police and other provincial government officials when the incident occurred.
