NPA rebel killed in Zamboanga Sur clash

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A New People’s Army rebel was killed in an encounter with government troopers in Midsalip, Zamboanga del Sur on Sunday.

Col. Leonel Nicolas, 102nd Infantry Brigade commander, said the clash, which occurred in Barangay Piwan, also left an undetermined number of rebels wounded.

Nicolas said an M14 rifle, landmines, a hand grenade and ammunition were among those recovered at the scene.

Meanwhile, information provided by a 15-year-old rebel returnee led soldiers to an arms cache in Antipolo City.

Lt. Col. Rimrad Feraer said soldiers recovered an M653 rifle, an M 16, an M14 with magazines and various types of ammunition.
