LPA spotted off Surigao Sur
MANILA, Philippines — Weather forecasters yesterday warned residents in Eastern Visayas and Caraga region against floods and landslides due to a low-pressure area off Surigao del Sur.
As of 10 a.m. yesterday, the low-pressure area was at 650 kilometers east-southeast of Hinatuan, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
PAGASA weather specialist Lorie dela Cruz said the trough or extension of the weather system would continue to bring light to moderate with intermittent heavy rains over Caraga and Eastern Visayas until today.
“Residents, especially those living in flood and landslide prone areas were advised to take appropriate actions,” PAGASA said.
The low-pressure area, which entered the Philippine area of responsibility on Saturday, has a slim chance of intensifying into a tropical cyclone, Dela Cruz said.
“It is expected to dissipate in the coming days due to the development of a frontal system northeast of the country,” she said.
Meanwhile, the northeast monsoon will continue to bring cloudy skies with light rains over Cagayan Valley, the Cordilleras, Aurora and Quezon in the next 24 hours.
Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have cloudy skies with isolated light rains due to the northeast monsoon.
The rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rains due to thunderstorms.
Zero to one cyclone usually enters the country during January, PAGASA said.
