Rob gang man slain in gun tussle

Ralph Edwin Villanueva - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — An alleged member of a robbery gang who was arrested on Monday was shot dead after he allegedly tried to grab a policeman’s firearm on Tuesday afternoon.

According to a report by the Pasay City police, the Baclaran police precinct asked for help in transporting Andy Capia to a hospital for medical examination.

Capia was in a police vehicle, being transported to the Ospital ng Parañaque, when he complained about his handcuffs being tight to

S/Sgt. Angel dela Cruz, who was escorting him.

When Dela Cruz tried to loosen the handcuffs, Capia allegedly grabbed the policeman’s firearm.

Police protocol prescribes that a suspect’s hands are cuffed behind the back, but Pasay police chief Col. Bernard Yang said he does not know if protocol had been followed.

Lt. Col. Joe Wilson Denamarca shot Capia in the chest as Dela Cruz and the suspect allegedly grappled for the gun, the report read.

Capia was declared dead on arrival at the Pasay City General Hospital.

Following Capia’s arrest on Monday, his cell phone was used to catch his alleged accomplices, former Army officer Joseph Candelaria and Nazzan Albao.

Police officers again used Capia’s cell phone to stage another entrapment, this time to arrest Alenain, Aseras and Cornoso, all former Philippine Marines.

The three were killed in an alleged shootout along Diosdado Macapagal Boulevard in Parañaque City on Monday night.

Candelaria – who was reported to be in handcuffs – and Albao, who were in police custody, were allegedly killed in the crossfire.
