1,099 inmates take DepEd’s ALS exam
MANILA, Philippines — A total of 1,099 inmates of the Manila city jail male dormitory took the Alternative Learning System (ALS) national accreditation and equivalency examination administered by the Department of Education (DepEd) yesterday.
Senior Inspector Jayrex Bustinera, spokesman for the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology, said 379 inmates took the examination for elementary level. Another 720 took the test for secondary level.
The exam is meant to test the inmates’ readiness to enroll in high school and college courses.
Once they pass the exam, the inmates will be accredited by the DepEd and considered graduates.
This year’s examinees are the third batch of ALS applicants under the “Eskwela sa Bawat Brigada” program of the DepEd.
Among those who took the exam was a 69-year-old inmate.
