Grab operation at SBMA approved

Bebot Sison - The Philippine Star

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT, Philippines — The Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) has given the green light to ride-hailing company Grab to operate in this freeport.

Grab will reportedly field an initial 120 units.

However, Olongapo Mayor Rolen Paulino told The STAR yesterday he was not inclined to issue a permit to Grab to operate in the city even as he admitted that it is a cheaper and more convenient alternative to the city’s taxi system.

”Our transport groups strictly follow the color coding system and ply only their assigned routes... We can’t let Grab operate here and disrupt the color coding scheme followed by our transport groups,” Paulino said.

He said he Grab cars might be allowed to unload passengers outside the freeport, but they could not pick up passengers within the city.

“Traffic enforcers will stop them if they try do that,” Paulino said.
