Cop hurt in Butuan NPA attack

Emmanuel Tupas - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — A police officer was wounded when suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked a police station in Barangay San Mateo in Butuan City yesterday.

Police Officer 1 Ritchel Golandrina was hit in the right leg.

Senior Superintendent Albert Magno, Butuan police chief, said the rebels strafed the police station at around 5:12 a.m.

“Our personnel stood their ground in a 10-minute firefight,” Magno said in a text message.

In Nueva Ecija, personnel of the Northern Luzon Command (Nolcom) launched pursuit operations for NPA rebels who attacked soldiers in Bongabon town on Monday.

Maj. Ericson Bulosan, Nolcom spokesman, said members of the Kilusang Sierra Madre fired at a military detachment while the soldiers were preparing to conduct humanitarian and relief assistance for victims of Typhoon Ompong.

“Instead of lending a helping hand to typhoon victims, they disrupted the composure of the troops,” Bulosan said. – Ben Serrano, Michael Punongbayan
