Magnitude 5.1 quake jolts Visayas, Mindanao
MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake rocked parts of the Visayas and Mindanao yesterday.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor occurred at about 12:24 a.m., with its epicenter located one kilometer southwest of San Francisco, Surigao del Norte.
The quake had a depth of 17 kms and was tectonic in origin.
The quake was felt at Intensity 5, which is classified as strong, in Surigao City; Intensity 4 or moderately strong in Pintuyan, Southern Leyte, and Intensity 2 in Palompon, Leyte.
Phivolcs warned of possible aftershocks.
According to a report of the Surigao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, two persons were injured while two vehicles were destroyed when a portion of a warehouse collapsed due to the quake.
Cracks on the walls of some residential houses and establishments and power outages in Surigao City were also reported.
Also yesterday, quakes with magnitudes of 2.8 and 2.5 also hit Santiago, Agusan del Norte at about 12:24 a.m. and Talakag, Bukidnon at around 6:32 a.m., respectively. – Ben Serrano
