Navy to deploy warship near Marawi

ZAMBOANGA CITY – The Philippine Navy will deploy its second landing dock vessel BRP Davao del Sur-LD602 to Cotabato to serve as another landing platform of the military’s ongoing operations to flush out Maute militants in Marawi City. 

The 404 feet long supply and operations vessel built by an Indonesian defense contractor will also deliver military supplies and relief goods for displaced civilians.  

Rear Admiral Rene Medina, Naval Force Western Mindanao commander, said the ship would help secure the coastal waters of Cotabato while serving as a staging pad of attack helicopters. 

“Its presence will boost security in the area,” said Medina. 

Capt. Richard Gonzaga, commanding officer of BRP Davao del Sur, said the ship has its own medical facility where wounded soldiers can be treated.

The ship arrived in this city on Thursday for a two-day port call and “open house.” 

Gonzaga said the deployment of the ship aims to promote peace, develop friendly relations and bring the Navy and the entire Armed Forces closer to the hearts of the people.

The 11,000-ton BRP Davao del Sur, which was commissioned on May 31, can accommodate 500 troops.  It is the second landing dock after BRP Tarlac, which was delivered and commissioned in May last year.
