Rebel returnee tagged in slay of Laguna lawmaker’s uncle
LAGUNA , Philippines – Police have tagged a rebel returnee in the killing of a lawyer-uncle of Laguna third district Rep. Sol Aragones in San Pablo City last March 16.
Senior Superintendent Romulo Sapitula, Laguna police director, said the suspect, a certain Mario Burgos, was positively identified as the triggerman by eyewitnesses and a child of the victim, 60-year-old lawyer Jesus Boy Carmona.
Burgos, according to Sapitula, was a former trusted aide of the Carmona family. Police are readying murder charges against him.
Carmona had just come from a fast-food outlet in San Pablo City at around 2 a.m. last March 16 when the gunman followed him to the parking lot and shot him at close range.
“With the help of several witnesses and the footage of a closed-circuit television camera installed near the fast-food outlet, (we were able to identify him). We have strong evidence against the suspect who is still at large,†Sapitula said.
He said two tracker teams have been fielded to track down Burgos who is believed to be still hiding in Laguna.
He said they do not only want to arrest Burgos, but “also to pin down or unmask the mastermind.â€
Superintendent Erikson Dilag, San Pablo City police chief, said the motive behind Carmona’s killing has yet to be established, but added it could be work-related.
