Doña Aurora lives in hearts of Aurorans

- Manny Galvez -

BALER, Aurora , Philippines  – One hundred twenty two years since her birth, former First Lady, Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon, wife of the late Commonwealth President Manuel Quezon, remains relevant in the lives of many Aurorans who continue to be inspired by her charitable works as a legendary samaritan.

Sen. Edgardo Angara and his younger sister, Gov. Bellaflor Angara-Castillo said Doña Aurora will forever remain etched in the memories of Aurorans for giving generosity a human face.

Angara, in a statement marking the 31st anniversary of this province, said every anniversary celebration gives honor to Doña Aurora who was known for her unwavering efforts to promote the social welfare of the people of Aurora.

The provincial government, on Saturday, held a “Dayana para kay Doña Aurora,” from the town plaza to the Capitol grounds in her honor. Dayana is a sort of a welcome ceremony accompanied by a marching band at the crack of dawn to mark the opening of a particular event.

The event was graced by Ricky Quezon-Avanceña, son of Doña Aurora’s only surviving daughter Zenaida, who represented the entire clan in the commemoration.

Avanceña said his mother, 88, wanted to be part of the celebration graced by President Arroyo but was prevailed upon to stay home and take a rest by her children and grandchildren.

Genuine concern for the poor

Angara-Castillo said Doña Aurora’s charitable nature is a trait that stands the test of time.”She is my idol and she epitomizes real, genuine concern for the poor and that’s what we want to internalize to every Auroran,” she said. She said that the provincial government is eyeing to build a foundation to remember Doña Aurora.

The two Angaras issued the statements as the memories of Doña Aurora was hardly lost in the din of the anniversary celebration, marked by a series of cultural festivals.

Born in this capital town on Feb. 19, 1888, Doña Aurora married Quezon, becoming the first to be called First Lady in 1933. She was described as dignified, charming, elegant, kindhearted and compassionate. She was a devoted wife to Quezon and a strict but considerate mother to their children.
