March 3, 2001 | 12:00am
Senator Franklin Drilon yesterday said he fully supports the policy of the Arroyo administration against gambling.
President Arroyo had issued a statement that she was against legalizing "jueteng" in the wake of speculations that her administration was considering pursuing the plan of deposed President Estrada to legalize "jueteng."
Drilon said he was also glad that Local Government Secretary Joey Lina is totally against gambling.
Drilon, the lead candidate of the People Power Coalition senatorial ticket, reiterated has position against gambling, saying it promotes wrong values.
"It is the correct policy considering that "jueteng" only serves to exploit the poor people. It does not help in improving the lives of the people," he said.
Drilon called on police authorities to step up its campaign against illegal gambling, particularly "jueteng," amid reports that some politicians are raising campaign funds through illegal gambling activities.
He urged PNP Chief Leandro Mendoza to closely monitor his men and punish those who are found to be in the employ of "jueteng" lords, and to expose politicians who finance or protect illegal gambling.
