MANILA, Philippines - At least one drug suspect was shot dead while four others were arrested in Metro Manila in the past two days.

A suspected drug courier, identified only as Maki, was shot dead when he and his companion, riding a motorcycle, tried to avoid a police checkpoint along C-5 Extension in Barangay San Dionisio, Parañaque City at around 2:30 a.m. yesterday.

Instead of stopping at the checkpoint, the suspects tried to turn the motorcycle around. They lost their balance and fell to the ground.

Maki reportedly pulled out a revolver and shot it out with the police officers while his companion fled on foot.

Senior Superintendent Jemar Modequillo, Parañaque police chief, said Maki was found to be carrying 13 sachets of shabu.

A .38 caliber revolver, spent 9mm shells, the shabu and the motorcycle were recovered at the crime scene.

In Navotas, barangay tanods Rowelito and Corazon dela Cruz were on patrol when they chanced upon Cherrylyn Castro and Jenica Pederigan with two sachets of shabu in Barangay Tangos at around 10:40 a.m. Thursday.

In Caloocan, anti-narcotics police officers arrested Arieo Layaso in a sting in ABES Compound, Barangay 5. They seized 10 sachets of shabu from Layaso.

Barangay 64 watchmen Bernabe Calimlim and Rodolfo Cristobal reportedly caught Jhune dela Peña, 21, using shabu in a public toilet in Poblacion Market, also in Caloocan.
