MANILA, Philippines – The city government of Makati yesterday ordered its veterinary services office and barangay officials to investigate the reported killings of feral cats in posh Dasmariñas Village.
The village association, in a circular last month, reported that at least 14 cats have been tortured and killed and a domestic worker who has been feeding the cats received two threatening letters.
Makati Mayor Romulo Peña said he “will not allow anyone, regardless of their social status, to intentionally inflict harm on our animals.”
The country’s animal welfare law punishes cruelty to animals with three years in prison and a fine of up to P250,000.
Veterinary services office head Dr. Vivien Manalastas said she has started coordinating with the village association’s officials, Compassion and Responsibility for Animals Philippines and Barangay Dasmariñas chair Martin Arenas.
Manalastas said that in 2007, some 14 cats and kittens cared for by an animal welfare group in the village were shot dead by a still unidentified person wielding an airgun.
Peña said he was willing to offer a cash reward. Earlier, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Asia offered P50,000 as a reward to anyone who could give information leading to the resolution of the case.
