Lancers, Warriors drub foes

MANILA, Philippines — The reigning  four-time champions University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers and the University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors upended separate foes in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (CESAFI) Season 26 basketball tournament Saturday night, September 19, at the

Cebu Coliseum.

Ivan Clark Alsola scored 14 points with five rebounds and an assist, while Season 2024 MVP Raul Gentallan added 13 points, four rebounds, and five assists as the Lancers improved to 2-1.

The boys of coach Gary Cortes led by as much as 28 points in the second half before quelling USJ-R’s late-game resistance to walk away with an eight-point victory.

John Onin Nonay sizzled with 20 points, five rebounds, two blocks and one steal but his impressive showing went to waste as the Jaguars suffered their third loss in four starts.

On the other hand, the Paul Joven-mentored USC Warriors pummeled the University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue (UCLM), 73-54.

James Paolo Gica poured in 19 points, four rebounds, five steals, and one assist for the Warriors, who now hold a 3-1 record.

Rey James Enriquez chipped in 13 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals, while James Tawacal contributed 11 points and five rebounds for the Warriors, who were firmly in control after taking a 41-30 halftime lead.

Wade Adam Luche finished with 14 points, five rebounds and a steal, while Marty Louisse Sotto had 11 points and three rebounds, but to no avail as UCLM fell to 1-4.

In the juniors division, the University of Cebu (UC) Junior Webmasters and the Cebu Institute of Technology-University (CIT-U) Junior Wildcats breached the 100-point mark as they clobbered their respective rivals.

Jade Bialan posted a double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds, with two assists, one steal, and five blocks to power the Junior Webmasters to a 105-68 demolition of the Don Bosco Greywolves.

Gamaliel Chaz de la Peña, Jay Xander Bulagsak and Mark Jovil Datoon combined for 36 points in UC’s second win in three games. The Greywolves stayed listless in three matches.

Skeril Miez Basilisco and Peter James Brobo both produced double-doubles as the Junior Wildcats obliterated the San Roque College de Cebu (SRCDC) Greyhounds, 103-59.

Basilisco charted 19 points and 11 rebounds with an assist, five steals, and a block, while Brobo collected 17 points, 10 rebounds , three assists, and one steal as the Junior Wildcats jumped to third place in the standings with a 3-1 slate.
