BENGALURU, India — The barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) will be postponed, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Friday, August 8.
The BSKE elections were originally scheduled for December 2025, but a bill has been filed to move them to November 2026.

The bill was set to lapse into law on August 14 without the president’s signature.
When asked if he would sign the law, Marcos answered in the affirmative.
“I'll sign it. I'll sign it,” the president said.
At the sidelines of his state visit to India, Marcos told reporters that the Commission on Elections needed to focus on the upcoming BARMM election this year.
“If that election fails, it’s a big thing, a big failure of the peace process,” Marcos said in a mix of English and Filipino.
“Kailangan na kailangan maging matagumpay ang pagganap ng halalaan ng BARMM,” he added.
(The BARMM elections really, really need to be successful.)
Since the Supreme Court ruled that shortening officials’ terms is not allowed, the government can only extend them.
The BSKE will also be held in the same year as the midterm elections.
Both Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro have also announced the president’s intent to postpone the BSKE.
